Pitstop or not ?
During one of my recent races, 35 laps long, I've realized that my AI opponents had pitted a few laps just before the end of the race. A shame since I had striven to hold it with one relay and my tires were shouting for help.
For the test that was to follow (20 laps), on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit with a Viper GT, I studied the possibility of supplying too.
Two options are open to me : either I did a pitstop and I went with soft slick tires, with gasoline for 11 laps until refueling, or I was going to cover the whole race without changing tires, so I used the intermediaries.
To make my choice, I had to work with the stopwatch:
- With soft tires, I was turning in 2 minutes and 17 seconds,
- With intermediate, I took a second longer,
- A supply cost me two minutes from the entrance to the pit lane, to exit.
It took also do a calculation. As long as I can keep the rythmn (which is impossible of course):
- With refueling and soft tires, I finished the race in just over 47 minutes and 30 seconds.
- Without pitstop and with intermediaries, I finished in 46 minutes.
The difference is huge! The choice was therefore made itself.
I must repeat this kind of experience for other races.
